My pace quickened as the threatening clouds darkened, reinforcing the weatherman’s report for the next few days. Taking lessons from the floods that hit our state the previous year, family members arrived at a solemn decision to stock all the essentials, including instant edibles. Surprisingly, our local grocer had purchased and piled indispensables ahead of the calamity, unknowingly following the game plan adopted by retail giant Walmart a decade back.

Man has this innate need to reinvent and evolve. To constantly innovate and grow.

His urge to progress drove him to spark fire from stone, get wheels rolling with wooden spokes, illuminate dark corners with electricity, and now muse over a Hyperloop traveling at 600 mph. The current phase of his evolutionary thirst happens to be in the digital arena, originating from the elementary step of digitization to a pivotal era of digital transformation.

“Data, data everywhere”, the paraphrased old rime, is true for every industry today. Not only a business is able to capture far more amount of data internally, but it can access humungous amount of public data – on competitors, demographics, public sentiment, government data, pricing, trigger events for lead generation and so on. Every prospective client, regardless of industry, knows that leveraging information is a key competitive edge in this information economy. This is excellent news for business information industry, because the market is only getting bigger.

Claire had been saving up for months for a weekend of trekking with her family. She had planned everything in advance, booked her family into one of the best resorts in the area, bought the best trekking equipment including bags, ropes, hiking shoes/boots, trekking poles and climbing gear, and even enrolled her kids in fun activities at the resort. What she didn’t plan on was that her dream holiday would be ruined by bad product data. You see, prior to her trip, Claire had purchased trekking rope from her favorite and most trusted e-Commerce site. And, she could swear that the product page said the rope was made of ‘kernmantle’ nylon – the type of rope recommended by her guide. But during the trek, she found, to her dismay, that the rope was made of a much-inferior ‘nylon-blend’ that left her with rope burns despite wearing gloves. As the family left the resort that weekend, Claire was certain about two things – one, it was going to be a long time before she tried trekking again, and two, she would never shop at her favorite e-Commerce store again, ever.

I’ve become a big fan of Google. Now before I start pouring in praises for the search giant, it’s quite amusing to note that their well-loved search routine begins with the modest process of web crawling performed by crawlers (aka spiders or bots) commonly referred to as Googlebots.

How they tested, tried and played with the crawled data has turned them into a massive unparalleled search sensation.

So what set them apart?

Sales rep – what a great tag to walk around with.

Dynamic career development, good networking, great pay, opportunities to travel around and what not?

You are the star, since you run the show by bringing business.

But, to the person on the answering side of the telephone, you are just another annoying salesperson trying to spark a conversation. As a sales guy, day in and day out you spend most of the time at your desk trying to call random people to bring business.

Cold calling is not dead. Phone sales is still one of the best ways to drive business.

The amount of human generated data on Earth is set to grow from around 4.4 zettabytes in 2010 to 44 zettabytes by 2020 according to IDC’s annual Digital Universe. There are an estimated 4,000 dotcom sites being created every day. In business and governance alike, data provides evidence, objectivity and helps unlocks insights. This should make the CIO all excited about the future, but is that the situation?
